Chuunibyou

中二病, the "mid-school 2nd year syndrome", is a colloquial and mocking word for the infantilism that comes from all the excessive self-consciousness and psychological complexes that are so common for adolescent boys and girls and affect part of their behaviour.

Ijuin Hikaru (hikaruijuin @twitter) is said to have been the first user of the term, as heard in his radio programme『伊集院光のUP'S』.

Also spells 厨二病, where 厨 roughly means "-fag" in the *chan sense.

Although it includes "byou" meaning a "disease", it does not actually relate to any medical condition of sickness or mental disorder.

Summary

Source: radio programme『伊集院光のUP'S』. During an airing back in 1999-1-11, Ijuin Hikaru says, "I'm still contracting chuunibyou myself". Starting the next week, on 18th, and up until 22nd of March they had a corner called "Am I sick? Oh, it's chuunibyou" that systematised "cases" of said disease contributed by the listeners.

Stemming as per the sense of "popular among the approximate age corresponding to (Japanese education system's) medium school's second year", it developed into the pixivers' meme.

Initially just an idiom for the radio listeners at that precise moment, it gradually become pervasive enough for the wide Internet to adopt. An accepted buzzword, it went to be settled in as another derogatory term for all the random weirdness that would be normally said and done by an adolescent youth. Following suit, kounibyou ("high school second year disease") was born in full mocking power against the painfully bad cases of chuunibyou, then "shounibyou" ("grade school" etc.), "dainibyou" ("university second") and other similar derivatives popped up in the wild and are now net slang, as well.

Ijuin Hikaru himself related on these: "This is too different from what I meant, I'm not interested in this word any more.".

Amahisa Masakazu's and Tanaka Katsuki's "Bakadrill" also features a related article.

Chino Boushi expounded on Don Quixote the novel: "The protagonist perceived the world through coloured glasses. When people talk to him, they never deny his delusions to keep the talk on rail, but that makes him sink in his fantasies more and more." He mentions that this vicious circle makes him want to add to the novel a sub-header, "Chuunibyou after fifty". As per『読まず嫌い。』角川書店 ("Didn't Read It. Hated It.", Kadokawa Shoten).

There are three types of protagonists introduced in the definitive book『中二病取扱説明書』, Chuunibyou: The Manual:

DQN type

Pretends antisociality, delinquency. They are actually serious or shy people, so they can't go all the way to become a delinquent. Tell many lies about fights or crimes. "DQN" is slang for an "antisocial person", a "troublesome delinquent sort".

Subcultural type

Likes non-mainstream, minor trends, establishes him or herself as a special being. It is not the love for the subculture, but for the coolness of not being the same as the others, as they are convinced.

Evil Eye type

Admires mystical powers, convinced as to having a hidden power as well, and plays out a self-made character in that setting. AKA. delusional type.

Examples provided in『オタク用語の基礎知識』, A Grounding in Otaku Terminology:

  • You begin playing European music.
  • You begin drinking coffee that's not even tasty.
  • Desperately stating you've known the a gone gold before they even did.
  • You think you could do anything if you tried.
  • Enraged at your mother, you say that she please "respected" your privacy.
  • Having learned about society somewhat and having become aware of history, you suddenly say, "The USA play foul".

More

If you admire idols, celebrities, some foreign culture etcetera, and start acting so as to become part of it yourself, it may be labelled as a variety of chuunibyou, but it is called "identification" in psychology, and that means a defensive mechanism (a psychological reaction trying to stabilise one's mentality at least temporarily) of the same kind as when you subliminally intake an admired person's definite skills or achievements. Things like clothes of popular people becoming fashion and such all go the same way.
