Game Overview
The player controls an anti-gravity race craft to navigate it through complex circuits while exchanging weapon fire. There are speed pads that grant the player a short speed boost, and weapon pads that give the player a weapon/item to use. Items (such as an energy shield, autopilot, and a turbo boost) aid the player for a short period of time, and weapons (such as rockets, a homing missile, mines, and a plasma bolt) serve to slow opponents down or destroy their craft.
Additionally, there are various teams (some of which represent countries) that you can race for. Each team has a ship with a variation of stats to help fit your playstyle. The tracks are in futuristic versions of different countries and cities. However, in Wip3out, WipEout Pure, and WipEout 2048, all of the tracks take place in a single location: Mega City, Makana, and Nova State City, respectively.

Notable events
Beginning of Anti-Gravity
In 2035, Pierre Belmondo and his team demonstrated the world's first anti-gravity craft in the Nevada desert. This changed the face of technology, science and physics itself.
Birth of AG racing
Pir-Hana (the precursor of Piranha Advancements) and Belmondo founded the A.G.R.C. (Anti-Gravity Racing Championships) in 2048. This opened up new possibilities and promise for counties around the world. This continued until 2050, when AG racing became an established sport. In 2080, Belmondo then decided to upgrade the F3600 league to the F5000 League, allowing weapons that could destroy craft. With this decision, the pilot death toll climbed dramatically.
The Fall of the F9000
The Anti-Gravity Purity Coalition exposed several sensitive documents containing details of corruption, deception, illegal practices, and even murder. The Coalition released these documents during the start of the 2170 season of the F9000. After that, the F9000 was suspended for further investigation. Telecom giant Overtel, who was in control of the race commission, was shut down; some of their board members committed suicide, and the others were arrested. The F9000's collapse led to riots in cities around the world and a global recession that took about a decade to recover from.
Rebirth
Following the success of the amateur FX150 League, the FX300 League was launched in 2195 on the island of Makana, with many teams from previous professional leagues making a comeback. In 2206, the FX350 League was held, with teams entering prototype craft and some pilots using old Tigron craft.
