Overview

The core of a pencil (鉛筆, enpitsu) is a fired from a mixture of natural graphite and clay and held in place by a wooden shaft. The only color for drawing is black.

Generally, the shaft has a hexagonal cross section, and the core has a total of 17 different hardnesses. The lead can be erased with an eraser or bread crumbs.

The lead tip becomes rounded after continued use, so the pencil should be sharpened with a pencil sharpener or a knife to produce lead each time.
