Overview

A miko (巫女/みこ, miko), or shrine maiden, refers to a woman who belongs to a shrine and assists the priest by performing Kagura (Shinto music and dance) and serving in Shinto rituals. In Shinto, it also refers to women who serve the gods.

Female shamans overseas are also often translated as miko in Japanese.

This is a motif often used in anime and other media. Sayo-chan from the game Pocky & Rocky is well known in this area as the original miko character.
