Overview

Melty Blood (メルブラ) was first released as a doujin game for PC at the Comic Market held in December 2002.

It was a joint production by the doujin circles Type-Moon and French-Bread. Fans were amazed at the quality of the work, which was far beyond the standard of doujin productions at the time.

In 2005, the game was released as Melty Blood Act Cadenza in the arcades, and was recognized as a high quality fighting game by relatively light otakus who do not go to Comiket or other events, as well as by fighting gamers who are not interested in light novels or PC romance games.

The game was later ported to the PS2 and other PC versions (the so-called "consumer version"), and after a newly developed beta version, Melty Blood Actress Again was released in 2007.

It was remade in 2021 under the title Melty Blood: Type Lumina to coincide with the release of the Tsukihime remake (Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon-).

Distinctive System

In the classification of fighting games, it belongs to the typical combo game where you aim for damage by making a series of attacks. This is due to the strong influence of Arc System Works' Guilty Gear, which was originally created in the same genre.

One of the biggest features of the game is the Magic Circuits gauge, which automatically recovers health when it is full (sublimated from Melty Blood Re-ACT to a special action called "Gauge Release"), and since any character can take chances depending on the gauge, the game focuses on tactics using the gauge.

The game also features a blocking system called "shield" (a defensive action that allows the player to receive a single attack unharmed), which can be used to launch counterattacks and the "Last Arc," a special counter-attack that is exclusive to gauge release.

Starting with the fourth game, Actress Again, you can choose between three styles, Crescent Style, Half Moon Style, and Full Moon Style. Before the start of battle to change your character's performance, making the game more competitive.

Moon Styles

Crescent Style

Basic normal style. This is a basic style that includes all of the systems from the previous game, making it easy for even experienced players to get familiar with.

Half Moon Style

For beginners. The commands are simplified, and passive and gauge release are automatic. However, "Blood Heat" will be sealed, and "Another Arc Drive", a sublimated version of Arc Drive, and "Last Arc" will be unusable.

Full Moon Style

Contrary to the half, this is for experts. It has a more serious system that is more like a gaming game, and it has an exclusive performance called "Initiative Heat" (a special action unique to Full Style that cancels normal and special moves (in the air) and cancels the movement of the move only when the gauge is maxed out. This makes the character more controllable. This makes the character's controllability completely different from what it was before.

Characters

In addition to the main characters from Tsukihime and Kagetsu Tohya, Sion was added as original character, and the story itself contains many elements that make it a meta sequel (or derivative) of the main story.

In the later works, additional original characters appear including Shiki Ryougi from Kara no Kyoukai participating in the game, making it more of a crossover.
