Background

Matou Kariya is the uncle of Matou Shinji, though he has actually severed ties with the Matou family for about ten years out of disgust. Disappointed with the lack of sorceric potential in Shinji and his father, Byakuya, Zōken blames Kariya for allowing the Matō's magical lineage decline since Kariya is the first in many generations to be naturally capable of sorcery.

While he loved his childhood friend Zenjou Aoi, he peacefully gives up trying to pursue her affections because she seemed to be happy accepting her engagement to Tohsaka Tokiomi. Aoi would later have two daughters, Rin and Sakura, who both came to like Kariya a great deal.

Abilities

As a heir to the Matou family lineage, he had the potential to possess the magic lineage of Matou family, the Crest Worms. Due to his disgust to his family, he never actually trained himself and thus lacked in formal training as a mage. With his participation in the 4th Holy Grail war, he forcefully had the Crest Worms implanted into his body, which ate away his body and left his health to progressively fail in return for significantly expanding his magic circuits and potential.

Although he gained the power to control insects as the result, his natural weakness against fire would mean he's no match for Tokiomi Tohsaka, which he indeed lost to him during the battle in the 4th war.

Aside from the ability to control the insects, he was also the master of Berserker, which he couldn't properly control due to the requirement of needing many times more prana than regular servants in order to remain materialized, his lack of prana generally made Berserker ran out of control during the halfway of the battle.
