About

The portrayal of Gulcasa and Nessiah from "Yggdra Union" and "Blaze Union" as a couple. One of the series' For Fujoshi pairings.

SPOILERS BELOW.

Gulcasa, who despite being a descendant of Brongaa--essentially, a demon--rejects the teachings of Niflheim and holds the human value that the weak should be protected.

Nessiah, a Grim Angel who rejects Asgard for not giving his people even the right to decide how to live as intelligent lifeforms.

It's as though the two of them meet precisely in the middle.

In "Blaze Union", at the start of the journey to go recruit Nessiah, he has the vague opinion of "Well, if he's living in solitude in the forest he's probably a weirdo".

But in their first conversation, he speaks to Nessiah in a friendly manner, and the first time the two get in close proximity he starts thinking, "What's going on, this is weird, my heart is racing" as if he's fallen in love at first sight.

After Nessiah joins the party, there are a lot of scenes where the two of them are together (directly next to each other).

After Siskier's death, Gulcasa chooses Nessiah to rely on rather than his other friends who are busy ignoring him for their own reasons. From that time on, Nessiah watches over Gulcasa, who isn't used to using his demon blood. Aside from treating Nessiah as his guide, Gulcasa talks to Nessiah about his worries and relies on him for help.

In "Yggdra Union", there are very few scenes where the two of them appear together, but in Chapter 3, Gulcasa says "If it's Nessiah, he can probably crush them easily" of the Royal Army that has frustrated his forces numerous times.

From Gulcasa's perspective, Nessiah is not only his best friend amidst all his beloved allies but also the person who understands him best, and has his absolute trust.

Even the official site and artbook state that Gulcasa trusts Nessiah immensely.

Also, after Nessiah's true identity is revealed in "Yggdra Unison", Gulcasa acts hurt and starts to call Nessiah "kisama (貴様)" rather than "omae (お前)". However, upon Nessiah's defeat in Gulcasa's storyline, when Nessiah says "I always thought you were dangerous, but..." as if in shock, Gulcasa laughs in response and says "I'm not as dangerous as you" as if gently teasing him.

At this point, depending on the player's choices, it is possible for Gulcasa to forgive Nessiah and bring him along again.

Gulcasa as seen by Nessiah

When they first met, he started cooperating with Gram Blaze out of the belief that Gulcasa would make a good pawn to provoke chaos. However, for someone who believes that emotions shouldn't be allowed to affect one's tactics and is ostensibly setting up part of their master plan, Nessiah's actions from this point on are a little bit odd.

In response to the plan to use Yggdra as Brongaa's sacrifice in "Yggdra Union", Nessiah must decide whether to give up on her and keep supporting the Imperial Army or to betray Gulcasa and save her along with the Royal Army. But he does not clearly make either choice. He gives the Royal Army a hint and kills himself.

Later, when he finally appears as the mastermind, he does not bring Gulcasa and the others back to life even though they would make the most powerful zombie soldiers. Instead, he uses the Royal Army's fallen ally as his pawn.

It's almost as if he was trying to hurt them, or even punish them for something.

For Nessiah, who should be able to see through humans' hearts, this sure doesn't seem like the time to make the Royal Army angry if he wants to get the Holy Sword back from them. But it seems as though Nessiah wasn't thinking calmly.

In the canon route of "Blaze Union", there is a scene where Nessiah frantically calls "I cannot lose you now...!" when Gulcasa is about to die of Brongaa's curse, unwilling to sacrifice one of his own soldiers.

From Nessiah's perspective, it appears that Gulcasa is someone he's come to care very much for, unable to help how he feels.

Trends in Fanworks

Due to the way that they die in the cruel scenario of "Yggdra Union", their relationship is sometimes treated as star-crossed love.

Amongst those who aim for a happy ending, there's the thought that if Nessiah, who is behind everything, were to be saved from his suffering then everything would be solved. Then, it follows that Gulcasa--who has nearly been crushed by injustice since he was born, just like Nessiah--might be able to make Nessiah give up on vengeance peacefully as someone who understands him. This way, Gulcasa can be seen as the only one capable of saving Nessiah.

And even if a clear-cut answer like that doesn't exist in the stories of "Yggdra Union" or "Blaze Union", that happy ending is fully possible in "Yggdra Unison".
