FLANDRE SCARLET (Flandre Scarlet) is the younger sister of Remilia Scarlet, the owner of Scarlet Devil Mansion, and also a vampire just like Remilia.
Flandre has lived for at least 495 years, but she spent most of her time in the basement of Scarlet Devil Mansion as she is a little bit insane.
Also, she is kind of isolated and not willing to go outside, so that the sheltered princess has not seen a living human yet.
However, after the「Koumu Incident」in Koumakyou, Flandre built personal contacts with the main protagonists (Reimu･Marisa), and began to show interest in things outside the basement. Although not interested enough for actually going to「the outside world」, but in the Shoot the Bullet(book), she was seen walking around in the mansion and even showing up just outside the mansion.
In addition, as a result of living isolated for quite a long time, Flandre has only ever eaten foods served to her, so she does not know how to attack a human properly. Generally, vampires will leave human alive when they attack human just in order to feed. But Flandre cannot limit herself and ends up blowing them away without leaving a drop of blood.
Her unlimited destructive power is far greater than that of her sister. It remains still unclear, whether Flandre and Remilia are sisters by blood or sisters in law.
Design
Flandre has a bushy head of blond hair, which is tied into a single ponytail on one side, with a unique hat(ZUN hat), which is called night hat and looks like a cover for door handles. She also has pupil in cardinal red, and chooses the red color as the motif of her clothes, wearing miniskirts with short-sleeved, for which she warps a sheet of cloth around her waist and have it fixed with two clips(wrapped･around･skirt). Two wings stretch from her back, like the branches, with hanging crystals in 7 colors on each of them, which makes them unusually peculiar. Moreover, she carries a curved black wand, with something like spade in poker cards on the top of it, and wears socks and red strap-shoes.
Different from her sister, who dresses in pink with light blue hair, Flandre is outstanding through the overall red color with her blond hair.
With that kind of appearance, Flandre strikes people as a little girl under 10 years old.
In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, a description about Remilia says「a little girl even younger than 10」. About Flandre, it says「she looks like just as young and little as her sister」. Even considered as a child in her early 10s, Flandre is still quite short for her age.

Although Flandre calls Remilia as「My lord sister」, and had seriously corrected Reimu , who had wrongly referred to Remilia with Repulika, emphasizing「It is Remilia! My lord sister is Remilia!」. On the other hand, however, inBunkachou(book), she herself called Remilia「that guy」secretly. The depiction about their relationship is not consistent in the original story, therefore we could not know whether Flandre admire Remilia or actually dislike her. Furthermore, according to EX.txt of Koumakyo , Remilia had also once said 「Well, I have just forgot all about that guy」. From this point we could say that they are actually more or less the same. Also, Remilia did not mind that much when Flandre called her 「that guy」, she just said「There you go, you just called your sister that guy again」.
Not much is depicted about Remilia’s view towards Flandre. There was a conversation, though, that Remilie asked Keine Kamishirasawa if she could be Flandre’s tutor in Eiyashou
Abilities
As the name itself suggests, Flandre can simply destroy anything, as long as the target is material objects(everything in Gumon Shiki).
Theoretically, 『Everything has an「eye」, where the tension is highest. By pouring her power into it, Flandre is able to destroy the target without any trouble』.
Flandre is capable to move the「eye」of anything into her hand , crush the「eye」and then destroy the target with just a squeeze.
With that power, she has once tried to destroy a meteor, where she stated that she ’’went squeezed and it went boom’’.
According to Gumon Shiki, Akyuu believes , that this power is the reason why flandre is isolated from others in Koumakyou.「If everything made for her to play with ends up totally broken, then no one would want to play with her 」, said Akyuu in Gensokyo Chronicle.
Relationship
As Flandre was generally quite isolated, for her there is no official statement to be found indicating a relationship with other characters. (She has also once said「I have never seen other humans other than those served as foods」, it is therefore plausible, that she had not met with Sakuya before she met with the main protagonists )
Besides, according to Gumon Shiki, Flandre had 「 occasionally met 」with Marisa when she tried to sneak into Koumakyou. And as mentioned before , Flandre had also once been interviewed by Aya in Bunkachou, but that is all.

Appearance
With lines, Flandre has appeared only in The Embodiment of Scarlet Deviland Shoot the Bullet
Fans show a strong desire to see her in the game(other characters from Koumakyou will appear in Twilight Frontier), but right now she seems to be really occupied as the 2 player color of Remilia.
According to Gumon Shiki, Flandre had been seen walking around the mansion instead of joining the wild party of Koumakyou, and also, showing up in a celebration party for the accomplishment of Bougetsushou (comics version), which was held exactly in Koumakyou.
However, according to 4Koma strips, Bougetsushou, Flandre actually showed up in a very Flandre’s way, by attacking Tewi Inaba and Reisen Udongein Inaba, who got lost underground during the party.
Also, there are scenes in Suzunaan, showing vague flashes of Flandre from behind, who is looking at a Chupacabra with her sister Remilia.
Although we cannot read the expressions on Flandre’s face, but with Flandre, Remilie did show an expression with relief and tenderness.

Origin
Many people hold the view, that Flandre is originated by a real person in 16th century, ‘’The Blood Countess’’ ,「Elizabeth Bathory」, for the following reasons.
- Magical Girl
It is said that Flandre is a vampiric magical girl.
Although it is not clear about her girlhood, but Elizabeth・Bathory was indeed obsessed with alchemy and dark magic.
The depictions, that vampire is actually the user of magic, is also not rare in vampiric themes.
If magical girl means「a user of magic」, then from this perspective, it would not be unreasonable to say, that Flandre is originated by「 Count Dracula in Dracula」(It was also described in the original story, that Count Dracula somehow「used magic for drinking blood」)
- a little bit insane
People say, the reason why Elizabeth killed young women, is that she could find pleasure in blood. She had showed severe mood swings since she was a little girl, and always presented a eccentric personality. It is said that besides Elizabeth there were also many other family members in Bathory suffering from mental disease.
Also, the name「Flandre」actually came from a circular ether(compound) named 「furan」, which is flammable and may even cause explosion when it reacts violently, and an English word ‘’frantically’’, (which means insanely and furiously).

Accused of mass murderer, Elizabeth was detained and died in a room of her own castle.
In addition, there are also people believing that Flandre is originated by「Carmillain」, a vampire in a fiction by Le Fanu

「A coin」came from a game by Atari named S.T.U.N Runner. The company had translated English words「Insert a coin」, just directly and simply, into Japanese as「コインいっこいれる」(a coin in). This directly translated subtitle with broken Japanese became popular then, which drew a lot of attention to the company.
In the EX Stage of Touhou, player are limited within Koumakyo and therefore could not continue. In other words, with that translation, it would show in the game center, that「there is only on coin, the one that you have just inserted」.
And Then There Were None
Flandre’s theme music, and most of her Spell Card present references to the novel by Agatha Christie, And Then There Were None. Moreover, if a player on their own operation and choose Marisa, a commentary about the novel would be played in a form of short story after she has been brought down.
Although Flandre knew about the content of the novel, but not the nursery song, which is actually the inspiration for the novel. Marisa had taught Flandre to sing the song, which implies her intention to take Flandre outside.
Lävatein
Taboo「Lävatein」 is well known as one of Flander’s Spell Cards
This Spell Card is always described as a sword, like a branch, firing great flame. As a classic image, we can also always see Flandre carring that sword in illustrations.
This kind of interpretation may have something to do with the description of Marisa’s「sword with huge flames」in The Grimoire of Marisa.
The fact is, that in Norse mythology, the Origin of Lävatein, there was few words about the appearance and use of Lävatein. But following the meaning of the word, it is often depicted as 「the ‘’ branch’’ of betrayal」and 「the ‘’branch’’ of evil magic」.
Based on that meaning, Lävatein was often seen as「the wand of magic」(or something like that) in Japan, but it is actually, in games , always equated with「‘’the evil sword with flames’’, burning down the world（also theory of ‘’flame’’ and ‘’sword’’）」of Surt. As a result, people seem to be naturally inclined, to associate Lävatein with a「sword」.
Taboo「Lävatein」 is one of a pair spell cards, and the other one is the Divine Spear「Spear the Gungnir」 of the older sister Remilia
By the way, during the creative process the Lävatein was actually called as「Hinokagatsuchi」(the God of fire), a name from Japanese mythology, but eventually was replaced with a name in Western style.
