Overview

Dark (闇/やみ yami　/　暗い/くらい, kurai　/　ダーク, dāku) refers to the absence of light, pitch-darkness. Humans are often driven by their imagination because they can't see anything in the dark.

It is basically an expression of night, but perhaps not so much in modern times.

Rather, it may be used these days to describe caves and other places that are usually inaccessible to people.

The universe is basically darkness.

It is often used as a metaphorical expression for emotions that have negative mental connotations, such as jealousy, despair, and fear.

It is considered to be the opposite of light (see Light and Dark).

Black can also refer to darkness and its metaphorical expression but on pixiv sometimes black gets translated to dark in English due to context reasons. Tags such Dark History, is Black History in Japanese, but Black History in English refers to Black History Month. Other tags such as Black Nintendo is changed to Dark Nintendo as it makes more sense in English.
